221A
221A Artist Run Centre is a non-profit organization that supports and facilitates dialogue between contemporary art and design. Over the past year, the organization has engaged over 5000 public visitors to acquire new knowledge and understanding around historical, social, and intellectual conditions of contemporary society through exhibitions, talks, workshops and publications. 221A is fortunate as a young organization to join a body of hard-working and respected arts organizations that make up Vancouver’s existing cultural ecology. However, 221A’s programme manifests a unique interdisciplinary community by presenting work by both contemporary artists and designers with a focus on work that creates new knowledge extensions between existing art and design practices.

the gallery space and beyond.
Artspeak
Artspeak is a non-profit artist-run centre, established in 1986 and is a registered charitable organization. Our early association with Kootenay School of Writing served to situate Artspeak within a unique interdisciplinary community of writers, poets, critics and visual artists. Artspeak is operated by a group of artists from the visual and language arts who share concerns in relation to the theory and practice of contemporary art. The mandate of the gallery is to exhibit contemporary art and to encourage a dialogue between visual art and writing. Of particular interest is work that crosses the boundaries between the two disciplines, exploring their common areas of praxis – a distinct aspect of the history of cultural practice in this region.

- Show: Awake in Mount Pleasant
- Artist: Arni Haraldsson
- Medium: Photography
- Location: CSA Space
- Address: #5-2414 Main St, Vancouver
Since the eighties Arni Haraldsson has amassed a vast collection of found imagery gathered from various religious publications such as Awake! and Plain Truth that were made available to him while out strolling in his neighbourhood of Mount Pleasant. Haraldsson clipped the photographic images from these publications and assorted them into various categories. The resulting deconstructed forms and groupings of found images simultaneously espouse the religious and utopic pedagogical intent of their publications and the personal aspirations and hopes of the local Mt. Pleasant followers who distributed them. Taken as such, Awake in Mt. Pleasant can be seen as an unorthodox portrait of the artist’s neighbourhood.

The dark overtones in both the subject matter and colour palette of the artworks in this exhibition are the effects of a kind of realism that is more concerned with conveying the realities of contemporary experience than with naturalistic depiction. However, the gloomy image of history these works register—one of violence and repetition with few prospects for change—never slips into pessimism. Instead, they draw their force from seeking to split the difference between affirming the possibilities of contemporary experience and calling attention to its frequently disastrous outcomes.

Opening: Corin Sworn at Contemporary Art Gallery
- Date: Friday, November 18 2011
- Show: Endless Renovation
- Artist: Corin Sworn
- Medium: Photography
- Location: Contemporary Art Gallery
- Address: 555 Nelson St, Vancouver
Endless Renovation begins with a happenstance finding. Several blocks away from her home in Glasgow in a back alley Corin Sworn discovered a box of discarded slides. The odd collection of images is the bases for a poetic narrative built from found texts and the artist’s speculations on the imagesand the photographer. Most shots are of solitary and unique clocks that tell time through a vertical and horizontal crisscross. The photographer it seems is an ingenious clock-maker. This narrated slide show, constituting two projectors, the recorded narration and the transcript, is assembled into a minimal installation with glass shelving and tailored curtains. The rooms composition imposes a subtle interference, making it difficult to view both images at once and correspond the numbered transcript with each photograph. The sequence is pertinent to the story, yet it is only conjecture, fabricated by the artist like the objects are made by their documenter.

Kesu’: The Art and Life of Doug Cranmer honours a man who embodied “indigenous modern” before the term had been coined, but preferred the descriptor “whittler” or “doodler” to “Kwakwaka’wakw artist.” In this celebration of Cranmer, Kesu’ captures the artist’s personality, his paradoxes, his range of work, and his profound influence on generations of Northwest Coast artists.
The exhibition displays a wide range of Doug’s artistic works in two and three dimensions in wood and paint, from totem poles, a canoe, masks, bentwood boxes, bowls, and prints, to his important “Abstract series” of paintings on mahogany plywood. Works and words by his students will also be included in this unique exhibit, which is organized as a series of overlapping modules that present aspects of the artist’s complex perspectives.

Presentation House Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of gelatin silver prints by Kohei Yoshiyuki. The series of images on display, collectively titled The Park, were taken at night in the vicinity of Tokyo from 1971 to 1979 and capture sexual encounters between straight and gay partners, and the voyeurs who stalked them. The ghostly overexposed look of The Park results from the infrared film and filtered flash that Yoshiyuki used to disguise his presence. Indeed, a striking aspect of the images is how the photographer captured the absorption of his subjects in their illicit activities without disturbing them.

Design implies application of creativity, invention, innovation, production, craft and skills associated with tools and materials. Design is about function and communication. The history of BC’s design reflects the diverse cultures, needs and spirits of the province’s places and people. The works within this exhibit are both well known and obscure; some are award winning designs others are vernacular-folk design. Included are objects created by aboriginal people, early immigrants and more recent newcomers. Both academically schooled designers and self-taught designers are represented. Some works celebrate regional images and natural materials; other designs use exotic materials.

Underlying Konopaki and Neufeld’s collaboration has been a fascination with the collision of conscious aesthetic decisions and ‘chance operation’, interpreted perhaps most famously by John Cage, but reaching back to Dada and Duchamp.

Imbued with ambiguity and poetic materiality Psychic Plaza brings together nine emerging artists that examine notions of process and the construction of an aesthetic language. The works evoke a sense of physical agency that alludes to the aesthetic means employed by utilitarian culture. Playing with notions of clairvoyance and ritualistic prophesy, Psychic Plaza speculates on the uncertain future and its relationship with the uncertainty of time and space
Opening: Raymond Boisjoly at Republic Gallery

- Show: The Writing Lesson
- Artist: Raymond Boisjoly
- Medium: Mixed Media
- Location: Republic Gallery
- Address: 732 Richards St, 3rd Flr, Vancouver
The Writing Lesson looks to the visual component of the heavy metal subgenre of black metal as a vernacular mode of writing to illustrate place names with indigenous origins. A significant amount of black metal music seeks to recuperate pre-Christian spiritual elements in the face of the forceful encroachment of monotheistic faiths. Through a rudimentary photographic process, the light of the sun has burned the names of places such as Masset, Skidegate, Chilliwack, and Yakima into plain black construction paper with the hope more will be revealed than concealed.

Takao Tanabe has been an important figure in Canadian painting for over 60 years. Born in British Columbia in 1926, Tanabe studied in Europe, the United States and Japan. Following a decade as head of the art program and artist-in-residence at the Banff Centre, he returned to British Columbia in 1980 where he currently lives and works.
This will be a retrospective exhibition of Tanabe’s work and will feature drawings and watercolours by the artist from 1945 to the present day. The intent of the exhibition is to chronicle the artist’s career through his drawing practice – often the starting point for paintings. The exhibition will examine, critically, how the artist has changed, adapted and/or reflected upon his subjects and the use of media to render a sense of “place” within his artwork. The exhibition is being co-curated by Darrin Martens and Ihor Holubisky (curator at McMaster University Art Gallery). This exhibition demonstrates the BAG’s commitment to senior Canadian artists and their work.

- Artist: William Wegman
- Location: Simon Fraser University Gallery
- Address: AQ 3004, 8888 University Dr, Burnaby
William Wegman has been creating paintings and works on paper using found postcards since the early 1990s. The practice of altering existing images began much earlier in his career, initially altering his own discarded photographs, such as Ray Cat (1978), to create something new and singular. Wegman currently uses the cozy scenes of vintage postcards, and extends/connects/alters them, until they become something completely different, unexpected – yet familiar.
”Do/Redo” features some of Wegman’s first altered card pieces, as well as new paintings, some with cards from Canadian vacation spots. The works in the show span a period of fifteen years, and Wegman’s characteristic intersection of humor and nostalgia is present throughout.

A fast-moving, text-based video artwork synchronized to a jazz score, THERE ARE NO PROBLEMS IN ART, contrasts the conflict and struggle of daily existence within the seemingly unproblematic and easy life of an artist. In the artists’ characteristically irreverent manner these issues are examined from the artists’ perspective through the use of a narrator whose musings provoke an empathetic critique from within that assumes simultaneously the roles of corroboration and critical inquiry.
