Making and Selling Photographic Fine Art in Vancouver

Archive for ‘Openings and Talks’

Going to openings is like eating and drinking to an artist. Sometimes it’s refreshing, and sometimes it feels downright repetitive. But, no matter what, you just have to keep on going.

Opening: Made in BC at North Vancouver Museum

Design implies application of creativity, invention, innovation, production, craft and skills associated with tools and materials. Design is about function and communication. The history of BC’s design reflects the diverse cultures, needs and spirits of the province’s places and people. The works within this exhibit are both well known and obscure; some are award winning designs others are vernacular-folk design. Included are objects created by aboriginal people, early immigrants and more recent newcomers. Both academically schooled designers and self-taught designers are represented. Some works celebrate regional images and natural materials; other designs use exotic materials.

Made in BC is co-curated by Sam Carter, Professor Emeritus,
Emily Carr University of Art + Design and Patrick Gunn, Designer.

Opening: Takao Tanabe at Burnaby Art Gallery

Takao Tanabe has been an important figure in Canadian painting for over 60 years. Born in British Columbia in 1926, Tanabe studied in Europe, the United States and Japan. Following a decade as head of the art program and artist-in-residence at the Banff Centre, he returned to British Columbia in 1980 where he currently lives and works.

This will be a retrospective exhibition of Tanabe’s work and will feature drawings and watercolours by the artist from 1945 to the present day. The intent of the exhibition is to chronicle the artist’s career through his drawing practice – often the starting point for paintings. The exhibition will examine, critically, how the artist has changed, adapted and/or reflected upon his subjects and the use of media to render a sense of “place” within his artwork. The exhibition is being co-curated by Darrin Martens and Ihor Holubisky (curator at McMaster University Art Gallery). This exhibition demonstrates the BAG’s commitment to senior Canadian artists and their work.

Talk: Juan Gaitan, Candice Hopkins, Jan Verwoert at Artspeak

Artspeak and Fillip present Intangible Economies, a three-day forum that broadens the notion of economy beyond its financial dimension. Initiated by Fillip Associate Editor Antonia Hirsch, the Intangible Economies series focuses on the multifarious forms of exchange fuelled by affect and desire and speculatively investigates the fundamental role these affective transactions play in modes of representation and, accordingly, in cultural production.

Opening: Corin Sworn at Contemporary Art Gallery

Endless Renovation begins with a happenstance finding. Several blocks away from her home in Glasgow in a back alley Corin Sworn discovered a box of discarded slides. The odd collection of images is the bases for a poetic narrative built from found texts and the artist’s speculations on the imagesand the photographer. Most shots are of solitary and unique clocks that tell time through a vertical and horizontal crisscross. The photographer it seems is an ingenious clock-maker. This narrated slide show, constituting two projectors, the recorded narration and the transcript, is assembled into a minimal installation with glass shelving and tailored curtains. The rooms composition imposes a subtle interference, making it difficult to view both images at once and correspond the numbered transcript with each photograph. The sequence is pertinent to the story, yet it is only conjecture, fabricated by the artist like the objects are made by their documenter.

Opening: Colleen Flynn-Lawson at Jennifer Kostuik Gallery

Colleen’s work presents meditations on the beauty and cyclical nature of existence, representing birth, life, decay and death before being ushered back onto the path of rebirth. She is most interested in allowing a shifting universe to reveal itself: the movements in which microscopic and infinite forms are actively engaged in the process of transformation.
